Mo Yan books hot, publisher rushes IPO

News of Mo Yan's Nobel Prize win moves books and spotlights publishing industry.

Mo Yan, the newest Nobel Laureate for literature, has seen a dramatic spike in book sales. The Nobel Prizes do not have nominees in the way of some entertainment awards, but as rumors of his contention grew, so did his sales—over 500 percent. His sales volume soared tenfold of ordinary times immediately after the award announcement, said Guo He, PR Director of DangDang.

It was reported that Mo Yan's latest novel, “Frog”, about China's "one child" birth control policy and winner of the Mao Dun Literature Prize, has been sold out: 200,000 copies of this book have been printed since 2009.

"After the National Day holiday, bookstores across the country demand more copies of Mo Yan every day," said Cao Yuanyong, vice general editor of Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House. "Our existing inventory has been sold out and now his books are all in print and selling as never before."

With the hot sales of Mo Yan's books through both offline and online book stores, Literature Beijing Genuine & Profound Culture Development Co., Ltd, "the only authorized publishing company in Mainland China," announced on its website, that it is accelerating the company's IPO process and expects to be listed in 2015, according to their vice president Shi Xiang.

"We have been signed with Mo Yan for a long time to publish his 22 old works and a new drama script,” said Ma Yueting, manager of the media department at Genuine & Profound. "News that he was awarded the Nobel Prize will greatly raise the sales of our new books."

Mo Yan helps to increase our sales, influence as well as brand image, said Tang Juan, vice manager of sales at Genuine & Profound.

It’s just a start: besides the unprecedented book sales, other commercial avenues such as e-books, movies and TV adaptions are on the way, commented one publishing industry insider.
