Amazon’s cloud service aborted in China, launch of Kindle delayed

Amazon’s preparation for cloud service in China has been unexpectedly suspended, delaying a rumored launch of Kindle in the country, Sohu Tech reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed exclusive source.
The source said Amazon started negotiations for setting up cloud service in China around 2010 and concluded the difficult process a year later, yet surprisingly, the company decided to suspend preparation work.
The Kindle slate is heavily dependent on Amazon’s service to provide content and more importantly generate profits, hence the failed introduction of Amazon cloud accordingly postponed the launch of the tablet in the country, the report said.
Amazon is adjusting the way to offer cloud service in China, according to the report.
Foreign companies that wish to operate cloud service in China must have governmental license, a local data center and a specialized maintenance unit.
As a successful example, Microsoft rents Chine Telecom’s data center and avoids the license problem through the cooperation; the maintenance of the Microsoft cloud is outsourced to local data managing company 21Vianet.
