Huawei is welcome in Britain, says official

Britain is “very open to investment" by Chinese telecom giant Huawei, the country’s investment official Gavin Little told the Beijing-based Caixin.com during his visit in Beijing Monday.

Despite recent U.S. moves to block the company over security concerns, Britain welcomes Huawei, he pointed out.

In September, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei was received in Britain by Prime Minister David Cameron. Ren announced an investment project worth 1.3 billion pounds that would create 500 jobs in the country the report said.

However, Huawei’s longstanding commercial relationship with BT Group Plc, the London-based telecommunications firm, is also under the investigation by a U.K. parliamentary committee. The investigation is scheduled to be finished in December.

The committee said Huawei failed to provide adequate answers to lawmakers' questions about their relationship with the Chinese government.

Following an 11-month investigation, the U.S. House Intelligence Committee said in October that regulators should block the world’s second largest telecom manufacturer from entry into the U.S. market.

Just one day after the congressional report, the Canadian government indicated strongly that it would exclude Huawei from helping to build a secure Canadian government communications network due to similar concerns.

Huawei was also banned by the Australian government from involvement in construction of a $38 billion national network program not long before.
