A man, who is claimed to have been influenced by the doomsday rumor, allegedly rushed to an elementary school in Guangshan County of the central Henan province and injured 23 students ages 6 to 12 after stabbing an old woman with a kitchen knife, according to local authorities.
None of the victims injuries was life threatening, local hospitals said. The suspect, Min Yongjun, was arrested on Sunday.
Six local officials who have been held responsible for the attack were removed on Monday, including principals of the school, a police chief and officials who are in charge of education and safety inspection.
School security videos showed that no teachers or doorkeepers were on the scene in the first few minutes when the suspect began stabbing people, the official People’s Daily reported on Tuesday.
According to school rules, teachers should arrive at the school before 7:50 a.m., while the attack occurred at around 7:30 on Friday. A time sheet showed that class advisors and teachers who were scheduled to be on duty that day arrived at the school after the attack, the paper said.
Rumors that Min is mentally ill are circulating, but Ouyang Minxing, vice director of the Guangshan Police Bureau, told the paper that Min has suffered from epilepsy but it didn’t attack him during the incident.
Ouyang said Min has been very sober about what has happened since he has being detained by the police, according to People’s Daily.
