Turner Network launches Toonami Asia
Starting on Dec.1 Turner Network is giving kids a place where it is always Saturday morning. The new channel, Toonami, will offer action-packed animation 24 hours a day.
Toonami is based on a branded block of programming within Cartoon Network’s daily schedule that aired from 1999 to 2008. On Cartoon Network, Toonami aimed targeted older animation fans with shows like Tenchi Muyo, Ronin Warriors and the Gundam series. The brand has been recently revived to the relief of their sincerely devoted fan-base.
In it’s new 24-hour incarnation Toonami will be bringing back at least one reliable product from the original line-up, Dragonball Z. In addition, the channel will be featuring a slew of American comic book characters including The Avengers, Iron Man, X-Men, Green Lantern and Teen Titans.
“With the launch of Toonami, Hong Kong kids will have 24/7 access to the most electrifying entertainment available. For the first time anywhere in the world, viewers will be able to see The Spider-Man and the Hulk meet Iron Man and Goku on the same channel,” said Sunny Saha, Senior vice president and managing director of Turner International Asia Pacific in a press release. “It really is the ultimate home of the action hero.”
The channel gives a reliable platform for Marvel Comic-based programs, many of which have been launched in coordination with the hugely popular films, of which, this summer’s The Avengers marked the end of “phase one” of the project.
With Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Comics, there is reliable financial backing for Marvel films and cartoons planned for release well beyond the foreseeable future.
